Rob Gronkowski hints that he might try out for US Sevens team in 4 years time
One of the NFL's biggest names - Rob Gronkowski - hints that he might make an attempt at the USA Rugby Sevens team in time for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
The 6'6, 120kg tightend suggested he'd like to lineout alongside New England Patriots teammate Nate Ebner at the next Olympics. Ebner took timeout from his NFL career to make an ultimately successful attempt at the US Sevens squad for the Rio games.
While Gronkowski has long been touted by rugby fans as the perfect specimen to make a cross-code switch, he'd likely have to take a longer sabbatical to adjust to the shortened form of the game. Unlike Ebner, Gronkowski has no experience in rugby, plus he would need to lose significant body mass in order to meet the notorious cardio demands of Rugby Sevens. While it might well be a pipe dream - his inclusion in a US Sevens team makes for a mouthwatering prospect, as well as a potential marketing extravaganza for rugby.
